Carer Controlled Wheelchair

18" 20" 26" Bariatric Wheelchair

The Rolleee Carer-Controlled wheelchair brings
confidence and safety when transporting patients.

After years of development and refinement with hospital
personnel we have developed a product that is simple to use
for transporting patients easily, safely and securely around
hallways, in elevators, and up and down ramps, while reducing the potential risk of injury or physical strain to the carer.

All these benefits dramatically reduce the chance of WorkCover
claims and are seen to be a very proactive and public way of making the workplace safer. After 27 years of experience in designing and manufacturing wheelchairs here in Australia, we bring the confidence that comes with having a product that does what we say it does and is virtually maintenance free.

Moorfields (Box Hill)

Rolleee power paks for wheel chairs and tub chairs Problem Moorfields (Box Hill) is a purpose built 120 bed facility comprising two main buildings built on different levels adjacent to parkland, shopping centre and social clubs such as the RSL. External roads and walkways with a steep incline link the two buildings. No arrangements were made for lifts or level walkways in the design of the building.

Care staff were pushing wheelchairs up and down the steep incline. Also, resident access to the community venues often relied on staff being available to push the wheelchairs up the hill.

The result has been a high risk of staff injuries due to the high force required to push the wheelchairs and high levels of staff fatigue. Staff have also tended to avoid these physically demanding tasks so the residents' ability to visit community venues has been limited.

The pushing of tub chairs and other large chairs over carpeted areas in bedrooms, lounge and dining room was also identified as a manual handling risk.

Solution Following rejection of other options, such as purchase of electric wheel chairs or electric golf carts, and comparison with a similar commercial product, the facility collaborated with Lockwood Electric Mobility to develop the Rolleee Power Paks for fitting to wheel chairs and tub chairs. This equipment allowed the implementation of a No Push policy.

Outcome

  • The risk of injury associated with pushing wheel chairs up and down steep inclines and pushing heavy chairs over carpet has been eliminated
  • Staff are less tired
  • Residents are more able to access community facilities and outings are easier to organise better health and safety awards case studies 03 31

Editor's comment: Similar product was rejected as it did not have a reverse option and the batteries and braking system were not considered powerful enough to cope with the sloping terrain of Moorfields.
